What Everybody Ought To Know -- About How To Set Process Priority Permanently On Windows

Priority Master 2009 for Windows 2K/XP/Vista 32/64 Bit - 1/2/4/8 Processors

Question: In a nutshell, what does Priority Master 2009 do?

Answer: The problem is that everything starts to slows down when you run more and more programs. Buying faster hardware will help, but that can not solve the problem. The Priority Master 2009 program allows you set the response time of your computer when running multiple programs at the same time. If your computer is fast enough to run the one important program that you need, then you probably do not need a faster machine. So, in effect, it can save you from having to upgrade or buy a new machine if the problem is in the response time when running multiple applications. It simply makes your machine perform like a faster machine by not running programs that you do not want to run and actually running the programs that you do want run. Just set the programs that you want run at a high priority and the ones that do not want run at a low priority. Do this just once by adding the program into the 6 automatically prioritized lists. It just can not get any simpler.

Question: I find prioritizing my programs rather scary. Real simply, how does the priority actually work?

Answer: Think of like playing cards. A Jack beats a 10 every time. The highest card always wind and the lower card looses. So if you have a "High" class program, it will get all of the CPU time it wants before the Windows scheduler will run the Normal class program. So, you see the program icon that shows an inverted pyramid. The top is RealTime and it get the CPU first. Anything left over goes to the High, then to the Above Normal, then to Normal, then to the Below Normal and when there is nothing else to run , it will run the programs in the Idle class. Priority Master 2009 is specifically designed to run dozens, even 100's of programs at the same time. Just run your programs and see them in the main window. Right mouse click on them and put them into the priority Lists. If you get in over your head and the system seems to slow down, just turn on the Full Time DEFENDER. That will make the system respond faster and then lower the RealTime or High programs that are using up the CPU time.

Question: How much CPU overhead does the new Full Time DEFENDER(FTD) in Priority Master 2009 use up?

Answer: Virtually nothing! In 8 hours of running, the total CPU time was only a few seconds using the minimum priority level scanning! There is more overhead if you include the deeper priority level scanning. If you turn on Include Invisible windows and Include All Processes, you are scanning every window and every process in the system. On a 1.6GHz Hp Pavilion laptop with a medium amount of programs running, this is less than 3%. Faster machines use less CPU percentage and the amount used depends on how many programs are running at the same time. Here is a FTD tip: Turn on All processes from the main window menu and then uncheck both Include Invisible Windows and Include All Processes. That will set all process (well, ones that allow their priority to be set) to Idle. As long as they do not alter their priority, you will get the full benefits of all background processes being Idle. Also, if you turn off the Invisible Windows and the Include all Processes, it will use virtually no CPU time, only the taskbar applications will be shown in the main window and that is far more efficient than the Task Manager and you can quickly locate your programs.

Question: Once I set the CPU affinity, can it be changed with the Task Manager or by the program itself?

Answer:   No. The CPU affinity is always enforced. So is the priority.

Question: Which is higher in priority Idle 15 or High 13?

Answer:   Idle 15 wins every time. It is higher than Normal 8. Anything below RealTime can have the level set to 15. That is exactly why the numbers are displayed on the GUI. On the Priority Graphic (on the menus and main window "Pri") shows the priority class and levels.

Question: How can I get the absolute "lowest" priority to run programs like System Mechanic and other big programs that freeze my machine when they run?

Answer:   Add them to the HOT List or the Run List. Select them so that it is the only program highlighted. Now press the "Edit" button and set the Class and Level to Idle. It will display Idle 1 in the entry when you hit the OK button. Now, run the program,m from Priority Master 2009 by pressing the "Run Selected button. In the background it will be Idle 1. This will make a dramatic difference in how much CPU time it gets and how well your system responds while it is running. When it is selected for foreground focus, it will be boosted to High 15 and probably be the highest priority running program. Optionally, you can remove the Foreground Boost using the main windows GUI. True, you have to do this every time, but the effect is dramatic and well worth the few keystrokes. next time you want to run it, just select the Hot List or Run List from the toolbar and run it from the dialog.

Question: My mouse is jittery and not responding on just this one program. Why does that happen?

Answer:   Some programs are CPU hogs. The default Foreground Boots sets it higher than the mouse. To fix, just add the program to the Foreground Boost Exclusion List using the right mouse click on the program in the main window GUI.

Question: My system suddenly stopped responding. Nothing worked. I could not even get into the Task Manager. Several seconds later, it started working. What was going on?

Answer:   Use the system tray menu and select Log Programs Starting. You may find that a process started during the time period that the system was frozen the next time it happens. You can lower the priority or add it to the Automatically Terminated Programs List.

Question: Why doesn't Priority Master 2009 display the amount of CPU used by the process?

Answer:   Because it is already displayed in the Task Manger already and very rarely needed since very processes use all of the CPU time. The only thing that really matters is that you set the applications in the order of priority that you want them to execute. Just think about it. As long as the program(s) that you want to be responsive get all of the CPU it needs, who cares about the background processes or how much CPU they use? You should be running at 100% of the CPU at all times to get the most out of Priority Master 2009. Just fill up the background with all of the system maintenance programs like disk defragging, adware/spyware removal etc.

Question: Since Priority Master 2009 allows me to make good use of time used now by the System Idle Process, how can I tell how much is being used now?

Answer:   Here is how find out how much CPU is being used by the System Idle Process:

Start the Task Manager
Select the View tab
Select Columns
check CPU Time
select OK

The CPU time will now be added. Click on the CPU Time column header twice to sort highest to lowest by clicking on the column header. Check the amount of time used by the System Idle Process That is the amount of time wasted because no programs were running. This is most likely the highest amount of time of any process!

Question: Well, there is lot of time reported by the System Idle Process. It is just that I do not what else to run. What programs should I run to use up the time?

Answer: There are plenty of programs to run in the background. At a minimum, you should run programs like PestPatrol or spyware cleaner, antivirus program and defrag your hard drive. That is plenty enough right there to make your system respond faster and greatly reduce your risk of spyware and viruses. You could also run programs like lottery number crunchers (and might even get rich!), help out SETI (although you should add this to the Hot or Run List and set the priority to Idle class and Idle level), do large database scans, download stocks or any similar programs.

Question: What is the Full Time DEFENDER in Priority Master 2009 and how does it help?

Answer: Works instantly in default mode after a fresh install and makes your computer respond many times faster than normal. It is like you at least doubled the speed of you processor and memory. For example, run a disk defrag, an antivirus full disk scan, a spyware cleaner like PestPatrol, run explore search for an impossible match file name like asdgasdgagagash and print a large document - all in the background while you surf the web. On the machine with Priority Master 2009 installed the machine responds as if there is almost nothing in the background. The other machine is toast!

Question: In the Full Time DEFENDER mode there is not System Menus. Why not?

Answer: In the Basic User Mode, you are not supposed to be setting the priority of anything. Just let the automatic prioritization do all of the work for you. If you switch to the Advanced User Mode by unchecking the Activate Full Time DEFENDER on the dialog, the System Priority menus will automatically appear. You can also use the Sys Menu on the main window toolbar and force them on. You can then add programs into the Automatically prioritized program Lists and they will be be set to Idle class automatically. Then when you switch to Advanced User Mode, the priorities that you set will become instantly set.

Question: I downloaded the demo version of Priority Master 2009 and it works great. My system works allot faster since I installed. The only problem I'm having with it is the "System Idle Process" is still getting allot of time. Am I doing something wrong? I thought that Priority Master was supposed to get rid of that?

Answer: Well, the Windows operating system always operates at the full speed of the processor unless it is a laptop with power saving features. When there is nothing to do, Windows runs full speed looking for something to do. So, the amount of time in the System Idle process is the amount of time that you could be using to do real work in the background. These can be things like running the antivirus scans, spyware cleansers, lottery, disk defragmenting, printing and others. So, in effect you can runs lots of programs at the same time and still get good responses from the keyboard, mouse and foreground application. Load it up with programs!

Question: Does it come with Parental Control features?

Answer: Yes. If you do not want your son or daughter running any specific program, just add it the Automatically Terminated Program list using the circle T on the main window ToolBar.

Question: Sometimes the mouse becomes jittery and difficult control. Will Priority Master 2009 help?

Answer: Yes. Some program at high priority is hogging the CPU. Two clicks: 1) Right mouse click on the system tray icon and select the DEFENDER. 2) Press Mode 1. That puts all of the programs into the Idle class and the mouse should move freely. You can restore the priorities using Mode 2 or simply use the new Full Time DEFENDER in default mode. Also, you can remove the Foreground Boost for just that one program in the main window and right mouse click on it. Then select Add to the Foreground Exclusion List. Your entire system will instantly become much more responsive if it was hogging the CPU.

Question: The priority in the title in the window or on the Task Bar flashes High 13 and Idle 4.  Is there a way to get this to stop flashing?

Answer: Well, many times simply including the Invisible Windows on the Priority Level Scanning Options will work. Certainly you knew that an invisible windowed background program could force itself into the foreground for a small amount of time and not have the foreground window loose focus - didn't you? On systems without Priority Master 2009 running, it is little wonder why users run very few programs at the same time. It simply can stop responding to the user actions at any time. Even the clueless user quickly figures out that the less they run, the faster machine responds. Of course, Priority Master 2009 just jack hammers the priority down to where you want it. So, just select the Include Invisible Windows and it will stop flashing.

Question: I put a program into RealTime and it was RealTime for a while. Then it went to Normal 8 and the High 13 when in the foreground. I reset it back to RealTime and the same thing happened. Does this thing work to set the priority or not?

Answer: Yes, it works perfectly as designed. The program that you put into RealTime hogged the CPU for 10 consecutive seconds. The automatic RealTime priority protection kicked in and reduced it's priority to Normal 8. The Foreground Priority Boost then kick it up to High 13. You we lucky, otherwise you would of had a dead machine. If you put the program in to the CD/DVD Burner list, the automatic RealTime protection package is disabled. If your system freezes, it is your fault. It should recover in any event after 10 seconds.

Question: On the Spanish version of Priority Master 2009, my Run and Search from the Start menu does not work. Is there a way to get this to work?

Answer: There is some incompatibility here. However, if you switch to the Classic Start Menu it works.

Question: I tried to prioritize a program and I got an error 6. What is that?

Answer: An error 6 is an access violation reported by the operating system. Software manufactures have noticed that people are setting their software to low priority and are fighting back. They have erected security descriptors to prevent users from changing their priority!!!! They want to run and they want you to suffer as much as possible.  You can use Priority Master to set the priority of the program that you want to be lower, the same or higher! If they are the lowest or highest already, then you can use the Run List to get priorities higher or lower than the normal value for the class. I know you need to know. Is it really necessary for software manufacturers to set their priority to make sure that the program runs correctly? ANSWER: NO!!! It is just easier to use priority than it is to fix the problem correctly!

Question: Do I need to start my programs from inside of Priority Master to be able to set the priority?

Answer: No! You run the program or browse to the directory. You press the add to the list button ONCE and the program's priority will always be remembered any time that it runs. It does not matter that it was automatically started by the registry, started by another program or any other method. The Hot and Run List are only for compatibility from previous versions. These also allow you to get 28 priority levels and the automatically prioritized programs only have 4 levels.

Question: I prioritized one of the Windows Services by putting it into the Idle List. Now, my machine locks up when I try a showdown and I have to hit the power button to reboot. This does not happen when I do not use Priority Master 2009. What is wrong?

Answer: Do not prioritize Windows Services unless you know exactly what you are doing. The idea is that you set the priority of your programs around each other to get relative differences that span the priority levels. The one user that tried this, took my advice to remove the Windows Service from the Idle list and the system returned to normal. Just let the Windows Services do their job as designed.

Question: How do I automatically minimize Priority Master on startup? It keeps popping up after a reboot and I have to manually minimize it.

Answer: Select the "A" on the toolbar. Now check the box with "Start on system tray and run Hot List".

Question: OK, just suppose that I am a dumb user. All that I want to do is the minimum amount of work and get the "big bang for the buck". I don't want to read the Online Help or do anything fancy. All that I want is to get the performance benefits so my machine performs like a much faster computer.

Answer: Here is what is simple and easy for the retail version. Just install and run the program.

1) Now, run your antivirus program, Pest (i.e. PestPatrol), defrag program and any resource hogs that slow down the machine when running in the background. At the toolbar (or menus) select the "A" for the automatic prioritization.  The dialog has "Set and Forget Process Priority" in the group box. Select the button "Virus, Pest etc.". Click the "Show Invisible Windows" checkbox so that it is unchecked to reduce the amount of programs to be displayed. Next, find the program's icon or use the Path/Window Title of the anti-virus or resource hogs and select the "Add Virus etc" button for each program. You may have to scroll up/scroll down to find them. When you have added them all, select Cancel/End.

2) Run the explore (from the Start->explore button) and your internet browser (example: Iexplorer or Netscape). Select the "Favorites" button. Now find the explorer and internet browser if you have one and select the "Add/ Favorites" button. Select Cancel/End when you are done.

THAT'S IT! Now restart Priority Master 2009 from the Start-Programs button. Now you are done. Every time that the system boots, Priority Master 2009 will automatically start and the programs will always have the right priorities any time that they run.

Question: What the difference between a program that added to one of the Automatically Prioritized list versus using the Hot or Run List?

Answer: The Automatically prioritized Programs (CD/DVD, Favorites and Virus/Defrag) only have their Class adjusted. Many multithreaded applications have threads at various priorities and these slide according to the Class in which they execute. This provides a simple and safe method to set the priority of the programs. The programs in the Hot or Run list can get a much finer level of prioritization and some additional features such as being able to change the level and force to foreground when the priority is dynamically modified.

Question: When I try to start the program for the first time, I get the following error: "Could not initialize ActiveSkin control. Please make sure it is installed properly." I reinstalled and reinstalled with the same results.

Answer: Make sure that you have admin rights when you log onto the Windows system. The installation program does the registration of the Active X Skin Control for you automatically. However, this registration fails if you do not have admin rights. You may need to log into the system as administrator or simply add administrative privileges.

Try Start->Run and type: regsvr32 actskin4.ocx

and restart Priority Master 2009.

Question: I tried to prioritize a program called Paltalk.exe by adding it to the Favorites. However, sometimes it shows up as Normal 8. What is going on?

Answer: When you check the running programs, you will see that another program called pnetaware.exe has the same icon and it is not prioritized and so it defaults to the Normal 8. Just add the program into the Favorites list. This will give you much better audio and video performance while running other programs in the background. Be aware that there are many software packages that have multiple executables and that you need to add each one just once into one of the lists.

Question: I have a 2.53 GHz Pentium 4, a 48X CD burner that has data underrun protection (i.e. burn proof). It will stop the laser when the buffer gets empty so that the burn will not fail. Why would I want Priority Master 2009 to burn a CD? It seems just fine to me.

Answer: The data underrun protection scheme for burning CD's is a can't see the forest for the trees situation. Sure it is better, but still a poor solution to the problem of getting a good CD burn every time. Here is why. That will work only as long as the CD burner program can get at least some CPU time.  Put the CD burner program in the background. Run a compute bound program in the foreground. This could be a game, a system performance test or just a lot of programs running such that the background CD burner program gets NO CPU time. The CD burner process will never complete. People who actually try to make CD's with those type of CD hardware still have to tread lightly and they could still fail to burn a CD. At a minimum, the more programs that you have running, the longer it can take to complete the burn process. Using the Priority Master 2009 Auto CD/DVD Burn Mode Status MAXI-PROTECT Package, any computer that can burn a CD with a full system load in the least possible time - every time. Therefor, a 400 MHz CPU with a 1X CD burner will still burn the CD faster than the 2.53 GHz with a fancy 48X CD burner when the background CD burner program gets no CPU time. Also, with the burn proof protection turned ON the CD will actually take longer to burn. Using Priority Master 2009, turn this feature OFF for the fastest possible burn time.

Question: Can I kill all of the running application with a single button and how do I do that?

Answer: The DEFENDER Mode 3 will terminate all of the running applications listed in the upper left corner of the dialog. Normally, you will want to uncheck the Show Invisible Windows first so as to not kill the system processes. If the Information and Warning messages are turned off, the programs will all automatically terminate. If they are on, then you will be prompted with the process names one at a time and you may cancel the termination of the remaining processes at any  time.

Question: What is this ridiculous claim that you make about 75% of the world PC resources being wasted? Be reasonable and not a maniac. Most people use their machines most of the time that they are on them. How do you intend to prove that statement?

Answer: Find out yourself. All corporations, all companies, all 2K/XP/Vista users world wide are asked to perform this test. At 8:00 AM reboot every machine that you have in house. At 5:00 PM go into the Task Manager and see how much time that the System Idle Process has accumulated. It is a good bet that at least 6 hours were spent spinning in the Idle Process doing absolutely nothing but looking for a program to run. Make sure that there are no programs like SETI that are compute bound running on the machine after reboot. Why will there be so much idle time? Because the Windows operating system can not read your mind to know which applications need fast response time and the more programs that you run, the slower your machine gets. Priority Master 2009 solves this problem so that you can get more usage from your machine and still get good response time in multitasking situations. At night, you are probably using 5 to 15% doing antivirus scans and disk defragmentation and daytime you are probably using 25%.

Question: Running a lot of program at the same time usually tasks a computer with a fast processor and lots of memory. How fast does my processor have to be and much memory do I need to see benefits of Priority Master 2009 on Windows?

Answer: There is no real bottom limit other than what Microsoft says is required for the version of the operating system that you are using. However, the biggest performance gains in multitasking are more dependant on the amount of memory that you have then anything else configured. More is better and speed is not important. For example, if you have 1GB of PC 133MHz memory, you will easily outperform a system with 256MB of the rambus memory running at 1000MHz when running enough programs to nearly fill the 1GB of memory. Machines with as little as 400MHz CPU are sufficient.

Question: Windows 2K/XP/Vista have the Task Manager and that can set the priority of the program. How is Priority Master 2009 better?

Answer: There are a number of advantages when using the automatic prioritization features of Priority Master 2009 over the Task Manager:

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) First, the priority and CPU affinity setting are permanent. Even better than that, they are constantly enforced. Using the Task Manager you have to reset the priority or CPU affinity every time you run the program.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) The 6 automatically prioritized list (CD/DVD burner, Favorites and Virus, Pest, Defrag and Game Software) allow the user to set the priority once and forget it. By putting Priority Master 2009 into the Startup Folder, the system boots up with all of the programs at the user desired priority. Using the Task Manager, you would have to set them one at a time.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) The priority that the user sets Using Priority Master 2009 is the priority that get. This is not true when using the Task Manager if the program attempts to change it's own priority. Priority Master 2009 employs an priority "jack hammer" and forces that the priority that the user sets.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) The priority is visually displayed in the main window title, any generated window or dialogs and on the Task Bar when selected. This is always the actual priority and allows you see quickly which programs will be executed first.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) All 22 user priority levels can be set, whereas only 6 can be set using the Task Manager

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) Groups of prioritized programs can be run all at once or selectively from the stored list of programs.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) Groups of program or a single program can be made to exit all at once when Priority Master 2009 exits.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) FGND Boost - The program can have different priority when it becomes the foreground task (has keyboard focus). This can allow more CPU power for background applications.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) Dynamically changing the priority gives instant visual verification of the newly assigned priority. In cases in which the application sets its own priority and using the Task Manager, you may not know that the priority of the program did not change.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) Setting a compute bound program too high in priority may lock up the machine using the Task Manager. There is an automatic recovery logic started anytime that a RealTime program is running. If there are no idle cycles for 5 seconds, then all RealTime programs will be reduced to the High class.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) The DEFENDER can set all widowed (visible and invisible) process to the Idle Class. This gives instant access to all system wide function and is not present in the Task Manager.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) The Class Analysis reports the number of programs in each class and determines UNDERLOADED, NOMINAL or OVERLOADED status and is not present in the Task Manager. This provides a unique metric of the system's performance versus actual computing capacity.

bluedot.gif (923 bytes) The optional program logging shows you exactly when the program ran, if the attempt to change the priority failed and any programs that tried to run that were not in any of the program Lists. The biggest advantage is that you can use google or some other search tool and determine if there are "bad" programs running. You can add them to the Terminated Programs List and always prevent them from running. Which, in some cases is much better than having to run programs to remove them every time you get infected.

Question: With the CPU's getting faster and faster all of the time, won't the need for a prioritization tool eventually be eliminated? Today, they are at 2.8GHz. Surely when they get to a billion hertz, everything will be so fast that all programs will respond instantly.

Answer: The Priority Master program is timeless and will never become out of date. Even if the processors can do 100 trillion instructions per second, there will still be a need to prioritize your programs. This is due to the nature of a compute bound task - one that consumes all CPU cycles. The best example is this is calculating the value of pi. It is a transcendental function that never ends (3.141592635 ......). What ever priority that this program is running at, all lower level programs will not get any CPU time. This is the very basis for the Priority Master program. There will always be programs that can be constructed that will consume all available CPU cycles and thus, there will always be a need to prioritize the running programs.
